112 Dead in Gaza: 41 or 157 Missing?

On August 4, 2026, the remains of 112 people were buried in Gaza City. The burial is documented by Reuters and the Associated Press. The grief of the relatives is real. But certainty ends with the very next figures.

Depending on the source, 41 or 157 people are still said to be missing. ZEIT initially adopted the higher figure from an Associated Press report. However, a Reuters report published later the same day contains a significantly different calculation. The version of ZEIT available on August 6 does not identify this contradiction.

The problem is not that the deaths are being reported. The problem is that a documented tragedy becomes a seemingly precisely measured story, even though the underlying figures contradict one another.

112 Dead in Gaza: What Is Documented

Reuters and the Associated Press report consistently, that a total of 112 human remains were buried on August 4, 2026. They had previously been recovered from the rubble of destroyed residential buildings in the Sabra neighborhood and assigned to the Al-Hassayna and Abu Sharia families.

Reuters, the Associated Press, ZEIT and WAFA consistently date the heaviest attack on the buildings to November 22, 2023.

The more extensive figures, by contrast, come from Palestinian sources, particularly information from civil defense officials and family representatives. Civil defense operates under the Hamas-led Interior Ministry and is not an independent institution.

This does not invalidate the documented burial of the 112 remains. But it explains why figures concerning 308 dead and 157 still missing must be treated with particular caution. No independently confirmed complete list of victims or comprehensive forensic investigation is documented in the reports examined.

ℹ️ The Verifiable Core

On August 4, 2026, 112 human remains were buried in Gaza City. The total number of victims, the number still missing and the precise identity of everyone buried have not, by contrast, been independently established.

Identification After Almost Three Years

Reuters reports that, according to civil defense officials, identification was carried out with the help of clothing, jewelry, signs of injury, medical implants and memories of relatives.

After almost three years, the remains were severely decomposed. In such cases, official forensic guidelines regard DNA, fingerprints and dental status as particularly reliable identification methods. Clothing, jewelry and personal characteristics can support an attribution, but they do not replace primary forensic confirmation.

In its report, Reuters mentions neither a DNA comparison nor identification based on fingerprints or dental status, nor an independent external examination. This does not prove that the attributions are incorrect. It does mean, however, that they must not be presented as independently forensically confirmed.

The precise finding is: According to civil defense officials and relatives, the remains were attributed to 112 people.

Two Calculations That Cannot Both Be Correct

Version One: ZEIT and the Associated Press

According to civil defense officials, approximately 40 people were recovered shortly after the attack. Now a further 112 remains have been found. 157 people would still be missing.

This calculation produces a total of approximately 309 people and is therefore broadly consistent with the claim that more than 300 relatives were killed in the attack.

However, it remains an independently unconfirmed claim.

Version Two: Reuters

Reuters likewise assumes 308 alleged victims. Of these, approximately half had already been recovered and buried earlier. A further 153 people had been lying beneath the rubble.

The Reuters calculation is therefore: 153 people previously missing minus 112 recovered remains equals 41 still missing.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA also cites precisely this figure. There, however, the number 308 has a different meaning: It is not clearly attributed to a single attack, but to the losses suffered by the extended family in several attacks since October 2023.

Infografik vergleicht 157 Vermisste bei ZEIT und AP mit 41 bei Reuters und WAFA
AP and ZEIT cite 157 missing people. Reuters arrives mathematically at 41, while WAFA cites 41 missing people in a broader family tally.

Either 157 people are still missing after the recovery or 41. Both figures cannot simultaneously describe the same group of victims.

What ZEIT Fails to Do

ZEIT published its report on August 4, 2026, at 1:43 p.m. and based it on the Associated Press. The differing Reuters report appeared later that same day.

The original ZEIT report therefore cannot be accused of ignoring a Reuters report that had not yet been published. At the latest after that, however, the contradiction could have been made transparent in an update.

The version available on August 6 does not do so.

The automatically generated summary also uses the metaphor of a “mass grave”. However, the report describes human remains recovered from the rubble of destroyed buildings and subsequently buried together.

A mass grave and a mass burial are not the same thing. The wording is clearly intended figuratively, but factually it can create a false impression.

The Unknown Reason for the Attack

No specific Israeli justification for the attack of November 22, 2023, is publicly documented. Reuters found no statement at the time from the Israeli military concerning the three residential buildings hit. A current inquiry also initially went unanswered.

The extended family affected included As’ad Abu Sharia, the later secretary-general of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement and leader of its armed wing. The organization took part in the terrorist attack of October 7, 2023, and in the abduction of hostages.

This background is relevant, but it provides no retrospective justification for the specific attack. It has not been established that Abu Sharia was in the buildings at the time, that the buildings were used for military purposes or that his organization was the specific target of the attack.

⚠️ What Is Currently Not Established

Not independently confirmed are the total of 308 victims of a single attack, the figure of 157 still missing, the precise composition of the victims and the military objective of the Israeli operation.

The Ceasefire Is Not Peace

At the end of its report, ZEIT refers to the ceasefire in effect since October 2025 and the Israeli military strikes that continue to be deadly. This reference is fundamentally correct, but it remains politically and militarily incomplete.

Since October 10, 2025 a ceasefire mediated by the United States has been in effect in the Gaza Strip. The plan’s second phase includes, among other things, further Israeli troop withdrawals, the reconstruction of Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas.

This disarmament has not yet been implemented. Hamas has not laid down its weapons and remains militarily organized. Israel makes further withdrawals contingent on verifiable disarmament and demilitarization. At the same time, Israeli attacks, Palestinian deaths and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations continue.

ZEIT does mention that the plan’s second phase provides for the disarmament of Hamas. However, it does not explain that this disarmament has not yet been implemented and that Israel and Hamas are disputing which side must act first. Israel is demanding verifiable disarmament before further withdrawals, while Hamas is first calling for an end to the attacks and Israeli withdrawals. This does not make the Palestinian victims any less real, but it is part of the full political and military context.

The humanitarian situation also remains grave. According to the United Nations, more than 1.9 million people in the Gaza Strip have been internally displaced, many of them repeatedly.

Anyone assessing the fragile ceasefire must therefore name both sides of the unfulfilled agreement: the disputes over further Israeli withdrawals and the still-pending disarmament of Hamas. Reuters describes the core of the dispute as a question of sequence: Both sides demand that the other act first.

Human suffering demands careful scrutiny and precise reporting.

The verifiable core stands: On August 4, 2026, 112 human remains were buried in Gaza City.

The total number of victims, the number still missing, the identity of everyone buried and the exact circumstances of the attack have, by contrast, not been independently established.

Serious journalism must not downplay civilian suffering. But neither may it turn the claims of a party to the war into established facts.

Figures need a clear source, an unambiguous definition and a comprehensible time frame. If even one of these is missing, statistics can quickly become a political narrative.

The truth does not become more credible when every claim from Gaza is adopted without scrutiny. Human suffering deserves compassion. Journalism owes it precision as well.

The burial of 112 people is documented. Whether a further 41 or 157 people were subsequently missing is presented inconsistently in the sources examined. Identification, the composition of the victims and the target of the attack have also not been independently established. ZEIT should have made these uncertainties more transparent after the Reuters report was published.
