Jewish citizens are being threatened, synagogues have to be protected, and Israel’s right to exist is being challenged ever more openly. What previously often took place on the political and social fringes has now arrived in many places on German streets, at universities and on social networks.
Antisemitism is not an abstract problem or a historical footnote. It affects people who live in Germany today.

Antisemitism is visible in the open again
Since Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 the social climate in Germany has also noticeably changed. While Israel mourned those murdered and families feared for relatives who had been abducted, Hamas’s crimes were relativized, justified or even celebrated on German streets.
Jewish citizens report that they can no longer simply wear religious symbols in public. Israeli flags are torn down or damaged. Jewish institutions, synagogues and schools are under police protection.
At demonstrations, it is not only the policies of an Israeli government that are criticized. Increasingly, the very right of the Jewish state to exist is being denied.
This is not a normal political debate. Anyone who denies Israel’s right to exist is not simply calling for a change of government or a different political decision. They are challenging the existence of the only Jewish state in the world.

Why this petition matters
That is precisely why the petition on the official portal of the German Bundestag is so important. It sends a clear signal in favor of the protection of Jewish life, against antisemitism and for Germany’s special responsibility toward Israel and its Jewish citizens.
A petition replaces neither laws, criminal prosecution nor effective protection for Jewish institutions. However, it makes visible how many people expect politicians and society to ensure that antisemitism is not merely condemned in speeches, but consistently fought.
Every signature increases political pressure. It shows that there are many people in Germany who are not prepared to tolerate Jew-hatred or become accustomed to its daily visibility.
Protecting Jewish life means protecting democracy
Anyone who believes that antisemitism concerns Jews exclusively is mistaken. Jew-hatred is directed first and foremost against Jewish people, but at the same time it attacks the fundamental values of a free society.
Antisemitism is always also an attack on democracy, freedom and the rule of law. It works with conspiracy narratives, enemy images, collective accusations of guilt and the notion that Jewish life must justify itself or hide.
A society that allows Jews to conceal their identity out of fear does not have a Jewish problem. It has a democratic problem.
This applies regardless of the political or religious direction from which antisemitism comes. Right-wing Jew-hatred remains Jew-hatred. Left-wing anti-Zionism does not become harmless simply because it presents itself as human-rights activism. Islamist incitement does not become legitimate criticism merely because it is spread at a demonstration against Israel.
⚠️ Antisemitism changes its language, not its goal
Jew-hatred does not always appear openly today in the form of classic antisemitic slogans. It often hides behind alleged criticism of Israel, when Israel is demonized, judged by double standards or fundamentally denied the right to exist.
Germany’s responsibility must become practical
Germany regularly commemorates the Shoah. Politicians visit memorial sites, give speeches and assure Jewish communities of their solidarity. This remembrance remains indispensable. But it loses its credibility if Jewish citizens have to be afraid again today.
“Never again” must not be a ceremonial formula. These words are credible only when concrete action follows.
This includes protecting Jewish institutions, consistent criminal prosecution, political clarity and a society that does not relativize antisemitic incitement. It also includes not treating Israel’s right to exist as a negotiable opinion.
Germany’s special responsibility toward Israel and Jewish life is not historical decoration. It is an obligation in the present.
Protecting Jewish life therefore also means not waiting until violence occurs before responding. Antisemitic incitement, intimidation and the demonization of Israel must be taken seriously before words lead to further acts.
