Every culture has its own word for what happens when ordinary people choose to run toward danger for the sake of strangers. Call it holiness, call it grace, call it simply the best of what we are capable of. Twenty-five years ago, on one of the worst mornings America will ever live through, we watched it happen in real time – in the dust, on ground that should have held only ash, and instead held something more: heroism. That is what I hope this anniversary can be about – not only what was destroyed, but what was revealed. Twenty-five years ago I felt that morning as a summons – pulling me downtown, into the dust. I have come to believe the heroism I saw there was a summons too, one that didn’t end when the dust settled. It is still calling us: to run toward one another, not away; to meet evil with strength, and to answer it with love."
